San Jose International Airport has been called the "most technologically advanced airport" in Airport World Magazine. The futuristic design unifies the airport's terminal facilities with style and functionality to convey a world class, high tech image; enhance the customers experience, and streamline operational efficiency. The tubular design pays homage to the high tech history of Silicon Valley, fitting into a narrow site restricted by existing roadways and waterways. The glass curtain walls filter in light to the arrivals hall and sloped wooden ceilings located on the interior warm the areas near ticket counters and checkpoints. The interiors pull inspiration from computer images as well as hosting one of the world's largest digital art collections. The airport is the West's first LEED silver certified airport.
The hands of 54 Silicon Valley residents greet the world from SJC on a mural spanning 1,200 feet and 7 stories high on the eastern side of the new Consolidated Rental Car Facility and Public Parking Garage. Created by international artist, Christian Moeller, the compelling facade known as "Hands" was constructed from 2 layers of architectural metal mesh and houses all airport rental car operations.
